EPISODE 04: Denise and Katherine
Location:
Montreal, Québec
Synopsis:

Denise Poitras, 80 years old, has lived in the same Montreal apartment for the last 20 years and has lived on the same street for 50 years. Wheel-chair bound since 2003, she cannot go out because the building where she lives does not have an elevator. She very much enjoys her weekly visit from Katherine Nadeau Noël, a student at McGill University. Katherine and other volunteers visit Mrs. Poitras for a chat, to deliver meals, play Scrabble, knit, anything to break her solitude and isolation. But it is with Katherine with whom she has truly become friends. “We care about each other”, says Katherine. “She’s the daughter I never had”, replies Mrs. Poitras. But now, the 80 year old woman is faced with a dilemma. She can move to a new apartment at street level in another part of the city. Katherine helps her friend weigh the advantages and disadvantages of doing so, but Mrs. Poitras’ mind is already made up.
