Labrador City, Newfoundland-and-Labrador and Montreal, Quebec
Synopsis:
The relationship between Doris and Lise is first and foremost a meeting of two widely different worlds and two very resilient women. Lise Boucher, 67 years old, takes on life head first, in spite of the incredible challenges she has faced. She had chosen not to let herself be brought down by her husband’s tragic death. In Labrador City for a three-month internship, Doris Ng Ingham, a young 22 year old Chinese-Canadian woman from Montreal, is billeted with Lise. Until her meeting with the 67 year old woman, Doris was torn between two worlds: her Canadian culture and her Chinese roots. The personal interest and affection shown by Lise help Doris open up so she can express her dilemma. She learns to accept that she is different. Doris brings an exotic baggage that she shares with Lise, who feels enriched by the discovery of the young woman’s Chinese culture. The two friends have opened their hearts and “homes” to each other.
